Basic ObedienceIf you have seen my previous websites you will know that I have previously had pages upon pages giving people instruction and advice as to how to train Basic Obedience..
On this revision, I have decided not to include such pages as I think that the current climate is confusing enough for owners wanting to train their dogs. It seems to me that every week, there is a new TV programme, video, book or e-book giving the dog owner advice as to how training should be done. There are so many of these and so many different ways to train a dog that I do not believe I should add to the confusion.
It is no wonder that with so many people promoting so many ways
to train a dog that owners change methods time and time again as one method or another does not appear to be working as quickly as they would like. So many of the dog training e-books in particular claim to be able to advise you how to train a dog unrealistically quickly that when things don't happen as quickly as they claim owners change their methods more often than they change their socks. Have you tried one of these "faster than a speeding bullet" books? Did it work? Please let me know as I will be curious to know which one it was. I regularly read these things and have yet to see one with realistic timescales or training methods. If you are serious about owning a dog and would like to ensure that both you and your dog are trained correctly, avoiding as many mistakes as possible along the way then the best way is to seek advice from either a professional trainer or a dog training school. It's always worth seeking recommendations if you can as people will soon tell you if they thought a particular trainer or school worked for them and their dog. One to one training sessions are useful if you can afford them and you feel that you would prefer to learn this way or your dog has a particular issue that you feel you need help with. If you are quite happy to learn with other people and their dogs then a training school is the way to go. The benefits of schools over private lessons are that as well as training, they are fantastic opportunities for your dog to socialise with other dogs and people. By being at a school you may find that as you see other people struggling with a particular part of the training, you manage to avoid making the same mistakes as you also get to see how the trainers help overcome any problems. You also have the benefit of having some experienced trainers there that can help you with tips and advice about all sorts of things to do with your dog other than basic training. If you decide on a training school rather than a trainer, please ensure that you
visit the school without your dog for at least one session for you to see how they train and make sure that you are happy with their methods before you part with any money. There are some schools that seem to
marshal people around the training area endlessly going through the motions without offering any real help to those experiencing difficulties. Again, please seek out recommendations if you can before you choose a school and attend it first without your dog to see that you are happy with their methods. Talk to some of those that are already attending and you should soon get a picture of how they feel the training
is coming along. Remember though that not everyone is attending training because they want to and some only go because they feel they have to. Try and speak to those that look like they want to be there as they will give you the clearest idea as to how the school is helping them and their dog. I will hopefully be adding a page or two containing details of trainers and schools/clubs that people have recommended to me so please don't hesitate to let me know if you think your trainer/school or club is worth a mention. The sooner you all start emailing me, the sooner the
page's) will appear. Please also tell me why you think your trainer or school is worth a mention so that I can add your comments to the same
page's) so that other owners can consider your recommended school/club or trainer. If you came to this website looking for assistance with a problem then please click the "Help" link on the left for services offered.
